Ighalo can rediscover scoring against Egypt –Shofoluwe

Former Nigeria defender, Yisa Shofoluwe , and former Flying Eagles coach, James Peters, have said Watford striker, Odion Ighalo , can pick up his scoring form for the Super Eagles when the team face Egypt in their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier later this month. The Eagles will face the Pharaohs, who are top of Group G, in a double-header on March 25 in Kaduna before heading to Alexandria for the return leg on March 29. Ighalo has been in a good form for Watford this season. He has scored 16 goals for the Hornets, helping them to cement their place in the English Premier League, which they just got promoted to. But the 26-year-old has yet to replicate the same form for the Eagles as he has scored only two goals in seven appearances for the country. Ighalo is expected to lead the Eagles line for the match against Egypt after coach Samson Siasia released the list of players for the Egypt match. Shofoluwe and Peters told our correspondent that the player’s present form i

Blackout: Electricity generation sinks to 1,580MW

Okechukwu Nnodim and ’Femi Asu The highly pronounced power failures across the country in the past few days may worsen following a partial system collapse that occurred on Tuesday, and the continuous drop in electricity generation due to what the government says is the vandalism of pipelines that supply gas to the power plants. As a result, power generation dropped to 1,580.6 megawatts on Wednesday. Data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator as well as information from senior officials of the different electricity distribution companies confirmed that power generation plummeted massively on Tuesday and Wednesday. The officials noted that this resulted in the reduction of the electricity load allocated to the Discos, stressing that this was why many parts of the country had been recording blackouts in the past few days. It was learnt that the partial system collapse that occurred on Tuesday happened at the Shiroro Power Plant and dragged down electricity generation to a

History of basketball

The history of basketball began with its invention in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than football. The game became established fairly quickly, very popular as the 20th century progressed, first in America and then throughout the world. After basketball became established in American colleges, the professional game followed; the American National Basketball Association (NBA), established i2n 1949, grew to a multibillion-dollar enterprise by the end of the century, and basketball became an integral part of American culture. Jacob Zuma, the president of South Africa on Tuesday, March 8, addressed a joint session of the National Assembly. Zuma’s visit to Nigeria and President Buhari is aimed at mending the relations between the two giants of Africa, as there are also indications that it is an opportunity for both presidents to address the South Africa-Nigeria Business Forum. But according to him, the main objective for his visit is to strengthen the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa so as both nation’s economic ties are fortified. Excerpts of Zuma’s speech read: “The main objective of the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa is to ensure that economic ties are strengthened. We are proud of this country, as Nigeria charted the way Africans need to follow with the 2015 election. “Nigeria’s role in ending apartheid in South Africa must be told endlessly to future generations of our people. Louis van Gaal admits Liverpool tie is must-win for Manchester United

Louis van Gaal admits the prospect of Champions League qualification makes Manchester United’s last-16 Europa League tie with Liverpool a must-win. With both sides languishing outside of the top four in the Premier League, winning the Europa League offers the most realistic chance of qualifying for Europe's premier competition next season. And Van Gaal conceded United's disappointing domestic form has placed added pressure on his team to advance past their arch-rivals into the last eight. "You have to win - there is no difference [with it being a Cup competition]," Van Gaal said. "United and Liverpool is always a big game. "It's historical and even bigger now because both teams are fighting for a Champions League place."

Arsene Wenger has brushed off calls from Arsenal supporters to resign

Arsene Wenger has brushed off calls from Arsenal supporters to resign Arsene Wenger gave short shrift to renewed calls for him to leave after Arsenal comprehensively beat Hull to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals. Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott each scored twice as the Gunners made light work of their fifth-round replay at the KC Stadium, although the 4-0 victory clearly was not enough for a section of the travelling support. 'Arsene, thanks for the memories but it's time to say goodbye' read a banner held aloft in the away end towards the end of the match, somewhat taking the gloss off an impressive display by the Gunners. Champions League - Today "There's nothing disappointing for me - you know, I do my job," Wenger said. "Look at the history of the club, since the club exists, and you will see that I have nothing to be scared of." Asked why the supporters had done it, he bristled: "I don't care. I do not want to speak about that beca

Paper Talk: Neuer, Feghouli, Icardi, Gundogan in Prem links

Liverpool want to sign Sofiane Feghouli, Manchester United are on the trail of Mauro Icardi, while Manchester City have been linked with both Ilkay Gundogan and Manuel Neuer, according to Friday’s newspapers. LIVERPOOL AIM TO BEAT UNITED TO VALENCIA STAR Liverpool are weighing up a move for Valencia’s Sofiane Feghouli, according to reports. The Algerian defender has been linked with a move away from Spain at the end of the season when his contract expires. Manchester United are said to be interested in him but the Reds are keen to beat their rivals to his signature, according to Spanish publication Don Balon. The report claims Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus and Roma also want to secure his services.

Chelsea captain John Terry admits he is rooting for Leicester City to end their fairy-tale season in storybook fashion by winning the Premier League title.

Defending champions Chelsea entered the year as favourites to repeat but instead it is pre-season relegation candidates Leicester who sit top of the table with 10 games to play. The two teams' fortunes have been in stark contrast this season with Chelsea forced to sack the most successful manager in the club's history, Jose Mourinho , while Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri appears a certainty to be crowned manager of the year after his stunning job with the Foxes.

Guinness Match of the Weekend: Tottenham vs. Arsenal

Sunday’s North London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal will, in many ways, be the same as any other derby between the pair. The meetings stretch back into eternity, drawing these two fierce rivals together in seemingly endless combat. The nuances, the dynamics have occasionally been different, but much has been the same; the vitriol, the animosity, the angst and the aggression. This year, however, the bout takes on a completely unfamiliar hue. No longer is this fixture a scrap for local bragging rights or a tussle in the ‘race for fourth’. Instead, these two giants are in the midst of a title challenge, and sit only three (Spurs) and six (Arsenal) points off leaders Leicester City heading into Saturday’s match—the 29th of the current Premier League campaign. Naturally, few Tottenham fans could have imagined their side would be so close to the leaders at this late stage of the season and seeking to put a whopping six points between themselves and their bitter local rival

Hodgson refuses to rule out selecting Rashford for Euros

The England manager hopes the Manchester United youngster continues to display his lethal instincts in front of goal and wants to see him follow in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney Manchester United starlet Marcus Rashford's whirlwind start to first-team football could be set to continue, with Roy Hodgson claiming he could name him in his England squad for Euro 2016. The 18-year-old striker shot to prominence in the last week with four goals in three starts under Louis van Gaal and is now in the frame for a senior international call-up . Having previously featured for the England Under-16 and Under-18 sides, Three Lions boss Hodgson claims he could now be willing to hand Rashford his first cap, but is wary of expecting too much.

Vincent Kompany: Man City still challenging for Premier League title

Vincent Kompany still believes Manchester City can catch Premier League leaders Leicester. City have not beaten any of the top-eight sides in the Premier League this season and have already lost eight league games -- more than each of their entire last four seasons. On top of that, they have failed to record back-to-back league wins since October and have won just three of their last nine top-flight matches. City face rock-bottom Aston Villa on Saturday as they start a run of fixtures against sides in the bottom half of the table and Kompany believes they can't afford any more slip-ups if they are to claim their third title in five years. He added: "We can't make any more mistakes but I didn't expect all the other teams to lose. "It is an awkward season; good for the fans but you can't predict anything can you?"

Pepe: Madrid have moved on from Ronaldo comments

The Portuguese star's criticism has been pushed aside, says the central defender, who is delighted to be playing again after a foot injury Real Madrid defender Pepe insists his team have moved on from Cristiano Ronaldo's comments in the wake of their derby loss. The Portugal superstar held clear- the-air talks with the squad after his comments, which he claimed were misinterpreted following the 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid last weekend. Madrid responded with a 3-1 La Liga victory over Levante on Wednesday, with Ronaldo scoring and providing an assist. Pepe said the squad had tried to put the issue behind them. "It happened. We talked. We are all together in the same boat," he said. "What we have to do is work and sweat during every game because many people in Spain and in the world suffer when we lose. "We need to work with great humility."

Van Gaal pleased with rivals' slip-ups

The Dutchman says he was delighted to see a number of his side's top-four rivals slip up after the Red Devils put themselves right in the mix with a 1-0 win over Watford Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was delighted to see his side move within touching distance of the top four after "fantastic" results elsewhere in the Premier League. The Red Devils secured a 1-0 win over Watford courtesy of a brilliant Juan Mata free-kick on Wednesday, while Liverpool's 3-0 thrashing of Manchester City, coupled with losses for Tottenham and Arsenal, means Van Gaal's men are now only outside of the Champions League places on goal difference. Fourth-placed City have a game in hand to come against Newcastle but Van Gaal was delighted to see his charges close the gap nontheless and mount pressure on those around them in the table. "It's fantastic," Van Gaal said. "That's the strength of the Premier League. It's also nice as we lost at Sunder

The end is nigh as Arsenal fans turn their backs on Wenger's flops

The Gunners suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat by Swansea at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and a season that promised so much is pretty much in tatters Arsene Wenger has experienced plenty of low points since Arsenal last won the Premier League title almost 12 years ago. Now it feels like the Arsenal manager really is reaching the nadir and the end. He has no chance of reviving the club’s title challenge this season, not with the type of poison that came from the stands during Wednesday night’s 2-1 home defeat by Swansea. Those supporters that stayed until the end did not just boo at the final whistle, they jeered the players down the tunnel one-by-one . After Ashley Williams put Swansea 2-1 ahead in the 74th minute, some fans had enough, storming out of the ground unwilling to watch the remainder of the match despite paying more for their season tickets here than any other club in the country. The crowd had already started to turn on Wenger when they expressed their anger a

Ex-England footballer Adam Johnson has been found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a girl aged 15. The jury at Bradford Crown Court found Johnson guilty of a charge of sexual touching, but not guilty on a charge relating to another sexual act. The former Sunderland player had previously admitted grooming the girl and one charge of sexual activity. Judge Jonathan Rose has warned Johnson he faces a potential prison sentence of five years. In a statement, Johnson’s victim said she had been through the “hardest year” of her life. She said meeting her hero felt “surreal” at first but she now feels “used and let down” by Johnson. She said: “I have had to face so much abuse after he claimed his innocence and I was made out to be a liar. “What happened in his car has turned my life upside down. “There are people who have made assumptions about me and this has been hard to deal with… Him being found guilty shows everyone I was telling the truth.” The judge said his prelimin

Melaye attacks Oshiomhole for marrying foreign wife Mark takes oath of office sixth time, Ogembe first time Omololu Ogunmade in Abuja The Senate wednesday rejected a request seeking the resolution of the National Assembly to prohibit perceived moves to turn Nigeria into a dumping ground for sub-standard products. The request was raised after a motion by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe which advocated the need to patronise made-in-Nigeria goods. Abaribe had in the motion, recalled that between 1960s and 1970s, the Nigerian economy thrived mainly on the export of made-in- Nigeria products. During the period, he said the number of industries shutting down was less than 10 per cent while Nigerians mainly consumed what was produced locally. He lamented that reverse is the case today where he said no fewer than 80 per cent of businesses have shut down. Regretting that Nigeria now consumes “what it does not produce,” Abaribe said trading in foreign and imported goods is now the order o

Shell Faces Fresh Pollution Claims in London Court over Ogoni Oil Spills

Trafigura owes $642.5m in taxes from crude swaps, Alison-Madueke shuns House probe Ejiofor Alike in Lagos and Damilola Oyedele in Abuja with agency reports British lawyers wednesday brought fresh claims of damage by oil spills to a London court against Royal Dutch Shell under a renewed scrutiny of the environment record of the oil giant in Nigeria. UK-based Daily Mail newspaper reported that a British law firm, Leigh Day, which represents the Ogale and Bille communities in the Niger Delta, filed two cases at the High Court in a bid to compel the Anglo-Dutch oil major to clean up the damage caused in the communities and also pay compensation. The lawyers hope to convince the court that Shell is liable for failing to protect its pipelines in Bille community from damage caused by third parties, which, they said, could mark a “significant expansion” in the firm’s liability. A 2011 report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) found that decades of oil pollution in Og

76 hungry Boko Haram militants surrender

Food embargo as a lethal weapon of war, is working in Nigeria’s north east, where hungry militants are fast losing the appetite to continue their war of attrition against Nigeria. Scores of emaciated-looking Boko Haram members begging for food have surrendered in northeast Nigeria, the military and a civilian self-defense fighter said Wednesday. Seventy-six people including children and women gave themselves up to soldiers last Saturday in Gwoza , about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Maiduguri, according to a senior officer. All are being detained at military headquarters in Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram and currently the command center of the war against the Islamic extremists, according to the officer. He insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists. The detainees said many more fighters want to surrender, a self-defense civilian fighter who helped escort them to Maiduguri revealed today. Food shortages could indicate that Ni

Nigeria government's audit removes nearly 24,000 non-existent workers

The Nigerian government has removed nearly 24,000 workers from its payroll after an audit revealed they did not exist, the Finance Ministry has said. The move has enabled a monthly saving of around $11,5m (£8m). The audit is part of an anti-corruption campaign by President Muhammadu Buhari , who took power last year. Corruption and mismanagement have long been a challenge to Nigeria's growth, and the government has promised to cut costs to face an economic slowdown. Nigeria is Africa's biggest economy and the continent's top oil producer, and its finances are under strain due to the recent collapse in oil prices. In Nigeria, all anyone can talk about is the dollar—and the fate of the naira

t hits you almost as quickly as the humidity when you step off the plane—Nigeria is going through a currency crisis. Even the pastor in our neighborhood area church worked it into his sermon. A prayer to have the kinds of jobs that pay in dollars instead of the shrinking naira. Amen. Every conversation with senior executives, bankers, barbers, and street hawkers either begins or eventually makes its way to the naira’s parlous state. My taxi driver has just given me a mini-lecture on the roots of Nigeria’s foreign-exchange policy. He’s also recommended his dollar guy if I want to get a “good deal” on exchanging them for naira. Nigeria has been on the edge in recent months, as locals watch the currency depreciate against the dollar at a rapid tick on the unofficial, but hugely influential parallel markets. Even amidst the turmoil, last week’s ride was particularly unsettling. Although the central bank’s official rate is set at 198 naira to the dollar, on the unofficial parallel m
