Cristiano Ronaldo really doesn’t help himself, does he?
After Iceland, population 330,000, caused the upset of Euro 2016 so far by holding out for a heroic 1-1 draw against one of the pre-tournament favourites. Ronaldo chose to swerve the magnanimous route and enhanced his reputation as primadonna of the highest order.
‘Iceland only tried to defend… they had two chances and then did not try to score,’ Ronaldo said after the game.
‘They celebrated like they had won the Euro cup or something. That’s a small mentality. That’s why they’ll do nothing.’
Shame on you Cristiano! Rather than blame Iceland’s supposed anti-football, the Real Madrid superstar should perhaps looks a little closer to home for Portugal’s false start.
After all, it was Ronaldo, according to whoscored.com, who attempted 10 of Portugal’s 24 attempts on the Iceland goal, which means he has currently had more shots than nine of the 24 teams participating at Euro 2016.
Meanwhile, someone should perhaps have a quiet word in Ronaldo’s ear with regards to free kicks. The 31-year-old has now taken 34 shots at goal from set pieces in major tournaments and has failed to score a single goal.
