It was more than a tad harsh considering it was a Tottenham player who fired England into a deserved lead, but Three Lions’ fans couldn’t help but label Roy Hodgson’s side ‘Spursy’ for throwing away two points in their Euro 2016 opener.
Eric Dier thumped England ahead with a rasping free kick with just under 20 minutes remaining but England were undone deep into injury time when Vasili Berezutski’s header looped over Joe Hart and dropped in at the far post.
Hodgson’s side contained five of the Spurs players who buckled under pressure in the closing weeks of the Premier League season, failing to win any of their final four games and handing second place to Arsenal having failed to keep with eventual winners Leicester.
Twitter, was in a typically unforgiving mood, an knew where to aim the blame for another painful England capitulation.
