Breaking: Nigerian army renews siege on Oporoza
Nigerian army returned to Oporoza in search for militants, Tompolo – The locals confirmed the development while many of them fled into the bush again Less then 72 hours after the Nigerian army ended six-day siege on the Oporoza community, the soldiers have returned to traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West local government Aarea, Delta state. Vanguard source said: “The soldiers are scattered all over the community, they are moving from place to place, we do not know what they came to do again.”
“Most of the young people fled into the bush again, but some women and elderly ones, who could not run waited behind to know what they came for this time around. I am seeing about 50 soldiers, though I am not sure of the exact number.” Another security source who was surprised over the presence of the military added: “There is nothing wrong in soldiers going back to Oporoza if they got more intelligence information on the perpetrators and their modus operandi.” The troops searched the Oporoza Guesthouse, which they ransacked earlier and other strategic places. Chief Godspower Gbenekama, Ijaw leader, also confirmed to Vanguard that soldiers raided Oporoza earlier today, but at about 7.57 am, another leader from the area, Piniki Azaiye, said: “They just left now without harassing anybody.” The soldiers raided the communities in search for the ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo, who has many times denied link with Niger Delta Avengers in the last few weeks.
For many years criminal groups in the Niger Delta have extorted and bombed oil installations for profit. However, the Avengers seem to be more interested in undermining the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
